Former winners Clarendon College begin daCosta Cup campaign

FORMER daCosta Cup champions Clarendon College are to start their quest for football honours this year when they host Central High in a Zone H game set to kick off at 3:30 pm.

After failing to add to their impressive list of trophies last season, Clarendon College, who had won back-to-back daCosta Cup titles in 2022 and 2023, will be hopeful they can reassert themselves this year.

Central High will go into the game with the psychological edge after getting four points from Clarendon College last season. They won the first game 1-0 and then played out a 0-0 result to top the zone for the first time. Central High ended the preliminary phase with 20 points — one more than the former champions.

Elsewhere in Zone H, Claude McKay High and Lennon High are set to meet, while Mount St Joseph Catholic High and Cross Keys are to clash in a Zone F game.

In Saturday’s opening games of the season many-time winners Cornwall College, as well as Old Harbour High, Manning’s School and Bellefield, scored big wins.

Cornwall College beat Green Pond High 6-0 to take the lead in Zone A, while Old Harbour High, Bellefield High and Manning’s School all recorded 7-0 wins over Tacius Golding High, Alston High and Petersfield High, respectively.

Last season’s beaten finalists McGrath High were also winners, edging Charlemont High 1-0 in Zone J.

The first upset of the competition came in Zone E with BB Coke High beating the highly fancied Munro College 2-0. Tevon Morris scored the goals in the 17th and 83rd minutes.

It was BB Coke’s first win over Munro since the 2023 season and it snapped a three-game losing skid against the former champions.
