Commandant’s Mouttet Mile hopes dashed after injury
COMMANDANT, a promising American-bred runner trained by Rohan Crichton, suffered an unfortunate fall during the Eros Trophy on June 7, 2025. The incident resulted in injuries to the horse and, according to Crichton, “the fall has put Commandant’s possible participation in the Mouttet Mile in jeopardy”.
Of the 16 available spots in the Mouttet Mile, eight have been reserved for overseas-based horses active since January 1, 2025. At this stage, five of those international contenders have arrived in Jamaica — signalling their intent to compete in the island’s richest — race while another two is set to arrive soon.
Additionally, two horses that have been racing locally since January 1, 2025 have secured automatic berths via the designated Win and You’re In qualifiers. Barnaby earned his place with victory in the Ian Levy Cup while I Dream Again booked his ticket by winning the Jamaica Derby.
The remaining Win and You’re In races include the Gold Cup, the Port Royal Sprint, and Jamaica Cup, which means the other three spots will be based on the highest earnings among the locals.
“Commandant, unfortunately, fell in his last race. He will run again but I don’t think he will be ready for the Mouttet Mile. That’s a little damp on us,” he said.
Crichton expressed disappointment, especially considering the owner’s and team’s expectations for the Mouttet Mile. “I feel it for the owner and all because, obviously, the idea was to get a good run in the Mouttet Mile instead of what he did last year,” Crichton said.
With Commandant’s prospects dimming, Crichton is now focusing on Legacy Isle as a potential contender for the Mouttet Mile.
“I think he [Commandant] is going to be okay but he won’t be ready for the Mouttet Mile, so right now, we have Legacy Isle,” he said.
