Spanish Town mayor charged with assault after election day altercation
ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — Mayor of Spanish Town Norman Scott has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and malicious destruction of property in connection with an incident at a polling station in St Elizabeth during the September 3 general election.
Reports from the Black River police are that about 12:00 noon, the 66-year-old Scott, of Williams Street in Spanish Town and Gazeland district in St Elizabeth, visited the polling station and exceeded his allotted time.
It is further reported that an agent’s attempt to inform him that his allotted time at the facility had expired resulted in a commotion. Another agent intervened to quell the uproar and was allegedly struck to the face by Scott before the mayor’s security detail removed him from the location.

Following the incident, a report was made to the police, and an investigation was launched into the matter.
Scott had denied any wrongdoing in the matter on election day.

Summons for the offences were formally served on the mayor on Friday, and he is scheduled to appear in the Santa Cruz Parish Court on Monday, October 13.
