Tebogo honoured by Botswana with new banknote
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Sprinter Letsile Tebogo has been honoured in his homeland with his image featured on the country’s 50 pula note.
The 22-year-old, who will contest the men’s 100m and 200m events at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan , is now prominently displayed on the Bank of Botswana’s P50 note.
Citi Sports reports that the image of a smiling Tebogo appears on the left side of the note, taking up nearly half of the design. The other section features Botswana’s 4×400m relay team, which won silver at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
The note marks the 50th anniversary of Botswana’s currency and celebrates national heroes.
Tebogo became Botswana’s first ever Olympic gold medallist at the 2024 Games, when he competed against Americans Kenny Bednarek and Noah Lyles.
Heading into this year’s World Championships, Tebogo is a silver medallist in the 100m and bronze medallist in the 200m.
In Tokyo, he is expected to face fierce competition from Lyles, Bednarek, Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson and Oblique Seville, and Ghana’s Abdul-Rasheed Saminu and Benjamin Azamati in the 100m event.
