National domino boss uplifts Jamaica’s seniors through timeless tiles
HUMBERT Davis, president of the National Association of Domino Bodies (NADB), is on a mission — uplifting the island’s senior citizen community through the timeless game of dominoes.
The ongoing NADB/National Council for Senior Citizens (NCSC) Domino Tournament isn’t just about competition. Davis said it’s a heartfelt endeavour, breathing connection, cognitive vitality, and joy into seniors’ lives.
Domino tiles clicked rhythmically in Morant Bay for the St Thomas leg of the competition last Thursday as seniors gathered with strategy and smiles for a day filled with excitement and competitive domino playing.
“Dominoes is more than just a game — it’s a way to keep our minds sharp, our memories active, and our social connections strong. It stimulates mental agility and fosters social interaction, which are crucial for healthy aging,” Davis told the Jamaica Observer.
Davis highlighted the warm and competitive atmosphere that defined the tournament.
“The tournament was a resounding success, with a warm and competitive atmosphere, and we’re thrilled to have made a positive impact on the mental health and resilience of our participants,” Davis said.
Gilbert Whittle and Healey Johnson showcased their skill and teamwork to take home the championship trophy.
Whittle said he was pleased with the win.
“It [tournament] was wonderful. I enjoyed the players around me and I wouldn’t mind if this can continue for many more years. I am happy with the win and I applaud the orgainisers for what is a truly a blessing for us seniors,” he said.
Davis concluded: “It was truly outstanding to see the participation and enthusiasm from our senior players.”
