Reggae Boy Blake lifts Supporters’ Shield with Philadelphia Union
Jamaica’s national goalkeeper and captain, Andre Blake, has added another major honour to his illustrious career as Philadelphia Union were crowned Supporters’ Shield champions in the 2025 Major League Soccer (MLS) season.
The Supporters’ Shield is awarded to the team with the best record across the league after the regular season.
Philadelphia’s triumph comes in a year when MLS saw record spending, led by Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami. Despite not matching the star power or payroll of some rivals, the Union, led by their longest-serving player, outperformed the rest of the league.
Blake maintained a clean sheet in the decisive match in which they defeated New York City FC 1-0 at Subaru Park on Saturday. It was his third clean sheet in as many games, underlining the defensive consistency that powered the team to the Supporters’ Shield.
The trophy is the second Supporters’ Shield of Blake’s career, following the club’s first win in 2020, and further cements his legacy as one of the greatest goalkeepers in MLS history.
“It’s just hard work paying off, there’s no better feeling,” Blake said after the team’s title-clinching match. “I always say I prefer team trophies, team accolades over individual accolades. And just being able to celebrate this moment with the team, words can’t describe how I feel right now.”
The Jamaican shot-stopper also collected MLS Save of the Month honours in April.
Off the field, Blake recently welcomed a daughter, adding even more joy to a memorable year both professionally and personally.
“Things are going my way right now, and I’m just grateful,” he added. “I’m living in the moment, and when it’s your time, it’s your time.”
Blake is set to join Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz squad for upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers after missing the previous international window through injury.
As one of the country’s most decorated players his leadership and experience will be key as the Boyz aim to take another step towards World Cup qualification.
