TOOTHLESS!
McClaren’s Reggae Boyz embarrassingly exposed in 0-2 loss to Curacao
WILLEMSTAD, Curacao — Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz left the Ergilio Hato Stadium frustrated and disappointed on Friday night following a 0-2 defeat at the hands of Curacao.
It was the Jamaican team’s first loss of the Concacaf World Cup Qualifying final round.
The jarring result, via goals from Livano Comenencia and Kenji Gorre, means Curacao have taken control of Group B with seven points, overtaking the Jamaicans on six points.
With only the group winner guaranteed a spot in next summer’s FIFA World Cup, destiny is more in the hands of Curacao as the Reggae Boyz will need them to drop points in their remaining three games — including the return fixture at the National Stadium in Jamaica — in order to return to the summit.
The Steve McClaren-coached Jamaicans will also need to look over their shoulders as Trinidad and Tobago moved to third in the group with four points following their 3-0 win away to Bermuda (zero points) on Friday.
The opening minutes in Willemstad saw both teams struggle to get control of the game. However, Curacao settled more quickly and made their opportunity count when a 25-yard strike from Comenencia left Jamaica goalkeeper Andre Blake stranded in the 14th minute.
The Boyz tried to respond, with Tyreece Campbell making inroads with some good attacks down the right wing. He registered the team’s first shot in the 35th minute when he made his way into the box, but dragged his effort wide.
Jamaica’s best chance came just before the break when Jon Russell’s scuffed effort went by Curacao shot stopper Eloy Room, but defender Jurien Gaari cleared the ball off the line.
In the opening four minutes of the second half Richard King connected with Bobby Reid’s cross but his header went wide of the mark.
The Jamaicans began to probe even more and in the 55th minute as Renaldo Cephas fired a powerful strike from the edge of the box but Room’s quick reflexes was enough to keep it out.
The visitors would regret those missed chances as a stunning effort from Gorre in the 67th minute doubled Curaçao’s advantage and sent the home crowd into raptures.
The Boyz thought they found a lifeline in the 89th when King finally put his effort past Room, but the goal was overturned by video assistant referee (VAR) as it was deemed that Karoy Anderson, who was standing in an offside position, was affecting the play.
The Reggae Boyz are expected to depart the Curacao International Airport this afternoon for Jamaica where they will prepare for Tuesday’s must-win contest against Bermuda at the National Stadium, while Curacao will complete two home games in a row when they next host Trinidad and Tobago.
