#EyeOnMelissa: Gov’t launches relief website to support recovery efforts
KINGSTON, Jamaica — In response to the widespread impact of Hurricane Melissa, the Government of Jamaica has officially launched a new online platform, supportjamaica.gov.jm, to coordinate national relief efforts, share verified updates and streamline donations and incident reporting.
The website is to serve as a centralised hub where citizens can access the latest news and advisories, report damages or emergencies, and make secure donations to aid those affected by the hurricane. It is part of a broader national recovery initiative aimed at ensuring transparency, efficiency and community involvement in the post-disaster response.
Information Minister Senator Dana Morris Dixon said the platform is a critical tool in the Government’s effort to provide real-time information and direct support to Jamaicans in need. She urged citizens to remain vigilant as people have already started creating fake pages to scheme others into donating.
“We’ve already been made aware of some nefarious individuals trying to collect money in behalf of Jamaica. We remind you that this will be the official site. If it doesn’t have ‘.gov.jm’ it is not legitimate. It is not an official government of Jamaica site,” the minister stated.
The portal features user-friendly sections for emergency updates, shelter locations, damage assessment, and donation options. Individuals and organisations can contribute funds securely online using credit or debit cards, with proceeds going directly toward relief operations managed by the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM).
Hurricane Melissa, which made landfall on the southwestern coast of Jamaica on Tuesday, is currently causing severe flooding, infrastructure damage and power outages across several parishes.
Citizens are urged to visit supportjamaica.gov.jm for updates, assistance and donation opportunities as recovery efforts continue across the island.
