From home to surgery: Tips on preparing for your procedure
A few weeks ago we explored the concept of “from hospital to home”, where we looked at tips for a smooth recovery post-surgery for patients. On the contrary, the time leading up to any surgical procedure (major or minor) is usually clouded by anxiety, fear, and confusion. Below are some tips that will help any patient overcome these challenges and approach the surgical procedures with positivity.
Understand what’s going to happen
Knowledge significantly reduces anxiety and fear. It is imperative that patients seek as much information about the surgical procedure before proceeding. Ensure your doctor thoroughly addresses the following:
• What is the purpose of the procedure ?
• What does the procedure involve and how long will it take ?
• What type of anaesthesia will be used ?
• How long recovery may take ?
• What am I to expect post-procedure ?
•What are the possible complications of this procedure — short-term and long-term?
Also, take the opportunity to do your own independent research —
Google, YouTube, and
ChatGpt are quite helpful to expand your knowledge base on the procedure. Once armed with knowledge, your attitude towards the procedure will be more positive and thus fear and anxiety will be decreased.
Speak with individuals who have had similar procedures
I have found in my experience that patients are less apprehensive to surgical procedures when they speak to other individuals who had similar and successful procedures. Though not necessary for all patients, some patients will benefit from this handy tip. In my practice, I have a lot of patients who are always willing and eager to share their experience with patients awaiting surgical procedures. I would encourage any patient to explore these discussions if you believe it will be beneficial to you.
Get your support system in place
Emotional support and reassurance from family members/spouses prior to surgery are extremely helpful. Ensure that a family member/spouse accompanies you to the procedure — this will help to ease any anxiety. Post-procedure, your doctor will give instructions as described in our last article about recovery. Your family member/spouse will be beneficial to you at this time. Emotional support will definitely make the journey easier preoperatively and post-operatively.
Preoperative Instructions
Whether minor or major, your doctor will educate you on preoperative instructions. Each procedure is unique and different preoperative instructions will apply to the respective procedure. This may include fasting and/or dietary advice prior to the surgery, the administration of certain medications prior to the procedure (hypertensive/diabetic/anti-anxiety medications, painkillers, bowel preps), what to pack and to take to the hospital for overnight stay, etc. As crucial as it is for follow up post-operative instructions, preoperative instructions are just as important.
Visualising a positive outcome
A positive outlook will usually lead to a positive outcome and this can be applied to all surgical procedures. This statement may sound simple, but studies have shown that this helps to reduce anxiety and even improves recovery rates. Believe in your body’s ability to heal well and it will.
It’s natural to have some level of anxiety, fear, and confusion about any surgical procedure. Ensure you are equipped with knowledge, this can never be enough! Follow the remainder of the tips and your road to and from surgery will be steady, calm, and smooth.
