Popcaan gets personal on 5th album Nothing Without God

Nothing Without God, the fifth full-length studio album by dancehall star Popcaan, showcases not only his musical growth, but the 14-track set tells the story of his emotional and spiritual journey.

Released November 7 via Unruly Entertainment/One RPM, Nothing Without God was completed weeks before Hurricane Melissa dealt a devastating blow on the western end of the island.

The project, created with a message of strength, faith, and restoration, now stands as a powerful reflection of resilience, one that may serve as a source of hope and inspiration for many.

Through deeply personal storytelling and uplifting melodies, Popcaan blends gratitude, reflection, and perseverance, offering both comfort and motivation to his fans across the world.

“The title of the album is inspired from how I operate in life on a daily basis. I really don’t do nothing without God,” Popcaan told the Jamaica Observer on Thursday.

The 37-year-old St Thomas-raised artiste was very hands on with this album, producing 80 per cent of the tracks.

Damage Musiq, Dane Ray, German, Cobe, Joel the Engineer, Droptop Records, Disaster Music, and Unruly Entertainment also produced tracks on the project.

“This project come from a real place — from loss, from learning, and from faith,” said Popcaan. “We’ve all been through so much, and I just want people to remember that, no matter how rough it gets, God never leave us. Him carry we through the storm every time.”

There are two collaborations on the project, Family First, featuring his brother Natebadz, and Kick It Wid Myself, one of the year’s biggest hits, which features fellow St Thomas native, Chronic Law.

But, aside from the thought-provoking title track, there are some other worthy moments on the album, including Immortal Life, Carrying it Home, and Climb Up.

Popcaan says he has grown musically on Nothing Without God.

“I’ve always done reflection, motivational, spiritual music since the beginning of my career — songs like Dream, Gangster City 1 and 2, Jah Jah Protect Me, System, Where We Come From, Unruly Prayer, Silence, and God is Love featuring Beres Hammond just to name a few. So I guess the growth is just the concept to make a body of work that was geared towards how I was feeling, which was more so a spiritual or thankful and reflective journey, or more on the spiritual tribute side, musically speaking. But I’m always and forever giving thanks to the Most High, praying and being grateful,” said the deejay.

As the island rebuilds and communities unite to recover from the effects of Hurricane Melissa, Popcaan’s Nothing Without God serves as a soundtrack for healing — encouraging faith, community, and forward motion.

“It’s not just about me or music,” Popcaan added. “It’s about the people, the country, and remembering that we’re still blessed. Jamaica strong, and God still deh yah.”

Nothing Without God follow up to Popcaan’s 2023 album Great Is He, which topped out at #3 on Billboard’s Reggae Albums chart. It features the Billboard charting single We Caa Done with Drake (the song peaked at #37 on Billboard’s Rhythmic Top 40 Airplay chart, #36 in Canada, #60 in Ireland, #5 in New Zealand and #37 in the United Kingdom).

To date, Popcaan has earned four entries on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. In 2014 there was Where We Come From, which rose to #2, so too 2018’s Forever, and 2020s
Fixtape (#15 in Canada, #94 on the all-genre Billboard 200 Albums chart).

Popcaan’s most successful market has been in the United Kingdom, where he has racked up two Britain-certified gold singles and eight silver certified singles.

In the United States, I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times), with Jamie XX and Young Thug, and Twist and Turn with Drake and Partynextdoor, have both been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.
