MoBay christmas tree-lighting ceremony to be scaled down
ST JAMES, Jamaica — Mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Richard Vernon, says this year’s Christmas tree-lighting event in the city will be scaled down, reflecting the parish’s ongoing recovery efforts following Hurricane Melissa.
Addressing the monthly meeting of the St James Municipal Corporation on Thursday, Mayor Vernon said that while the festive tradition will continue, the celebrations will be modest.
“Normally we would have much excitement as we approach the whole entire season… especially with your Christmas tree lighting. This year, your Christmas tree-lighting event will be scaled down,” he informed.
The mayor noted that there will be no accompanying concert this year, but a solemn lighting and prayer vigil will still be held in Sam Sharpe Square.
He said the ceremony will also serve as a time to honour those affected by the hurricane and reflect on community strength.
Mayor Vernon placed the scaled-back celebration in the broader context of the municipality’s recovery initiatives, highlighting that multi-agency efforts remain in place to assist vulnerable groups.
“We have activated a multi-agency task force to coordinate and accelerate recovery. The task force is focusing on vulnerable groups, including senior citizens, persons with disabilities, the homeless… those in shelters. We’re ensuring that there is targeted support, outreach and aid distribution,” he said.
The mayor also outlined operational activities, including night clean-up operations with support from the Jamaica Defence Force and the St James Municipal Corporation.
He acknowledged the resilience of the community amid the challenges.
“Hurricane Melissa has tested our resolve, but Montego Bay is not broken. Our municipality is battered, but still beautiful. We have been picking up the pieces, and our people remain resilient and strong,” he said.
“Let this season of light begin with remembrance, power and action. Together, we will turn this devastation into determination and build a city that stands stronger, safer and more united than ever before,” the mayor said.
