TRELAWNY, Jamaica – The Falmouth Public General Hospital received a boost Friday following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa, thanks to a significant donation from the Chinese Benevolent Association (CBA).

The relief items — which included toilet tissue, bottled water, food supplies, baby pampers, blankets, and other essential care products — were formally handed over at the facility.

Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton, who had been visiting the Spanish-donated field hospital at the facility, witnessed the donation and expressed gratitude on behalf of the hospital and the Ministry of Health and Wellness. He described the contribution as an inspiring example of compassion in action during a challenging time for Jamaicans.

“A whole heap of stuff — from toilet tissue to water, to food, clothing, pampers, blankets — I just want to say on behalf of the team here at Falmouth, thanks to the Chinese Benevolent Association,” he said.

“We are thankful for your support, and this is what humanity is all about. We help our friends and family and citizens in times of need. So thank you very much, and God bless,” he added.

Johnny Huang of the Chinese Benevolent Association said the organisation remains committed to supporting communities across the island as the country recovers from the storm’s impact.

“This is the third [hospital] one, and we plan to do as much as we can,” Hung shared.

“We are just delivering relief as much as we can, all over,” he added.

The donation is part of an ongoing national relief effort as several public institutions continue to struggle with the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, which left some sections of the island without power, damaged infrastructure, and prompted an increased demand for emergency assistance.

The Chinese Benevolent Association has historically played a role in charitable outreach in Jamaica, and Friday’s contribution continues that legacy.
