JRC, SVREL host 2nd Racehorse Aftercare Day — Celebrating equine welfare and resilience
On Saturday, November 22, 2025, the Jamaica Racing Commission (JRC), in collaboration with Supreme Ventures Racing and Entertainment Limited (SVREL), will host the second instalment of the Racehorse Aftercare Race Day at Caymanas Park.
The event, held in honour of the JRC’s flagship racehorse retirement initiative, “Beyond The Finish Line”, aims to highlight the importance of safe and sustainable retirement options for racehorses across Jamaica. The JRC programme promotes responsible aftercare by connecting retiring horses with suitable facilities and providing education on life beyond the racetrack.
This year’s Racehorse Aftercare Race day will feature 10 races, nine of which will be named in recognition of the programme, showcasing the commission’s ongoing commitment to equine welfare and the broader racing community.
The featured trophy race of the day will be named the Racehorse Aftercare Day Trophy, while other races will bear the names of notable retirees who have successfully transitioned.
Racehorses serve the industry for roughly a third of their lifespan, living up to an average of 30 years, making responsible long-term retirement essential. Retired thoroughbreds are highly versatile and continue to contribute through breeding programmes, tourism, equestrian sports, therapy, policing, and as companions, proving their capabilities as off-the-track-thoroughbred (OTTBs).
The event also comes at a critical time for Jamaica’s equine industry, as Hurricane Melissa has caused significant damage to farms, breeding facilities, and equestrian centres across the island, many of which are home to retired racehorses. Through this race day, the JRC seeks to not only celebrate resilience but also to invite public support and partnerships in rebuilding affected farms and their communities as we strengthen aftercare.
“Racehorse aftercare is an industry responsibility we all share in protecting our horses when they leave the sport,” said Dr Simone Johnally, veterinarian at the JRC.
“As Jamaica recovers from the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa, we urge the public and our partners to join us in supporting the farms, facilities, and communities that are rebuilding to ensure these horses receive the care, safety, and opportunities they deserve,” she added.
The Racehorse Aftercare Race day will offer a unique opportunity for the public to engage with the local racing community, learn more about the retirement programme, and contribute to the future of Jamaica’s thoroughbreds beyond their racing careers.
