J’Calm and Nigy Boy collaborate on Tony Kelly produced Emotions
Singer J’Calm is gearing up to release his sophomore album Emotions in January. It is the follow up to Niche, which was issued in January 2024.
Emotions, led by the title track, features hit-maker Nigy Boy. The song was produced by Grammy-winning, Billboard charting and multi-platinum selling producer Tony ‘CD’ Kelly.
In an interview with Observer Online on Friday, J’Calm spoke about collaborating with Nigy Boy, his forthcoming album and working alongside Kelly.
“Teaming up with Nigy was like meeting someone that experienced the same thing from the opposite side. And his introspective lyrics complimented what I did. It was easy going, coming together creating something that makes you sit down and think,” said J’Calm, while adding that Emotions was personal.
“It came from my experience mostly in my relationships and also from what I observe my generation going through a lot in their love life.”
According to J’Calm, he benefited from working with an experienced producer like Tony Kelly.
“I learnt a lot from Tony Kelly and working with him felt as if the detail in the process matters but one of the main things I learned is patience and having a sense of timelessness with your music; feeling it more than executing it,” J’Calm disclosed.
The album Emotions will feature collaborations with notable acts such as Wayne Wonder and Ky-Mani Marley. There is also a collaboration with singer Khalia. The Nigy Boy collaboration will also be a part of the project.
Said J’Calm, “I collaborated with Tony “CD” Kelly, Emudio, Big Zeako, and a couple others in the production scene. This album comes from more of a vulnerable place than anything else. It’s my second album and it taps into my roots with Jamaican production, but the emotions, lyrics and message transcend across all cultures of the world. It’s me continuing my story from the beginning.”
The 20-year-old J’Calm whose real name is Jovane Nathaniel Gayle began his music career experimenting with beats and vocals, developing his signature style that fuses patois with standard English, and gained recognition through industry figures like Sean Paul and Kelly. A major career highlight was his song Tempted which was featured on former United States (US) President Barack Obama’s 2023 summer playlist.
Emotions was released via K-Licious Music and DubShot Records.
