Tsunami affects north Japan following magnitude 7.5 earthquake
TOKYO, Japan — A tsunami was triggered in Japan late Monday after a 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the northern coast of the country, injuring more than 20 people.
A report from the Associated Press indicated the earthquake struck about 11:15 pm or 2:15 pm GMT in the Pacific Ocean around 80 kilometres from the country’s coast, while the tsunami was up to 70 centimeters (28 inches), affecting Pacific coast communities.
The government indicated damage assessments are ongoing, while 23 people have been confirmed injured with no deaths yet, according to the report.
The country’s meteorological agency also issued a warning about possible aftershocks in the next few days citing risk of a massive magnitude 8-level quake and possible tsunami.
The report indicated the possible quake could occur along Japan’s northeastern coast and urged resident to review their emergency preparedness.
