Glenmuir thrash McGrath to coast into daCosta Cup semis Cornwall tackle Kemps Hill in hunt for last-four spot
Glenmuir High claimed the first semi-final spot in the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition after hammering McGrath High 4-0 in the quarter-final Group A match at Glenmuir High on Tuesday.
Orel Miller scored twice for the Andre Peart-coached team which moved to a perfect six points in the quarter-final round.
Glenmuir improved their unbeaten record in the play-offs to eight-straight games and also secured a place in the ISSA President Cup set to be played in January.
After a good run throughout the season, McGrath High appeared to have run out of goals at the most important time. They have lost three-straight games by an aggregate of 0-7.
Glenmuir gave McGrath High no time to settle as Miller shot them into the lead in the fifth minute, and Conroy Nicely doubled the advantage in the 33rd.
Miller completed his brace in the 50th minute before Orane Watson completed the scoring from the penalty spot.
The other semi-finalists from Group A could be decided this afternoon when Cornwall College take on Kemps Hill High at Glenmuir High.
Kemps Hill came up short against Glenmuir High on Saturday, losing 2-3 to a team they were playing for the third time this season.
Cornwall, the 12-time daCosta Cup champions, are coming off back-to-back tough wins, beating Christiana High in the round of 16 and beating McGrath High 2-0 in the quarter-finals on Saturday, despite finishing the game with 10 players.
Carlondo Morris, with 32 goals scored so far for Cornwall College, is expected to attract most attention from the Kemps Hill defenders. But Shakeem Gibson and Nickane Brown, both of whom have also scored in double digits, could prove to be match winners.
On the other side, Shemar Daley is the biggest threat for Kemps Hill High, but Ricardo Dean and Robert Donaldson have combined for seven goals so far in the play-offs.
In Group B, Dinthill Technical are scheduled to welcome Clarendon College, while Christiana High and St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) are slated to meet at Manchester High.
The first meeting between Dinthill Technical and Clarendon College, in the round of 32, had failed to produced any fireworks. While that encounter ended 0-0, there could be a rethinking of strategy from both sides as they hunt a win.
STETHS were held 1-1 at home by Clarendon College on Saturday, snapping a run of six-straight wins in the play-offs. But they will be seeking all three points against Christiana High in Manchester.
Christiana failed to win in their last two games. They were beaten 1-3 by Cornwall and then held 1-1 by Dinthill. They will hope to prove that they belong among the top teams in rural schoolboy football.
