‘Jamaica a source for employer-ready labour’ Charles Jr tells US agriculture bosses
KINGSTON, Jamaica— Minister of Labour and Social Security Pearnel Charles Jr has moved to assure agricultural employers in the United States that Jamaica is a source for employer-ready labour, at a time when American agriculture faces significant workforce shortages and heightened regulatory demands.
Charles Jr led a high-level Jamaican delegation to the National Council of Agricultural Employers (NCAE) Annual Labour Forum on Friday, December 5, 2025, marking one of Jamaica’s most decisive moves to strengthen overseas employment partnerships and support the country’s post-Melissa recovery.
“Employers cannot afford uncertainty,” the minister said. “Jamaica understands the moment. We understand your challenges, and we have prepared a workforce that strengthens your operations rather than adding risk.”
The minister highlighted that overseas employment is now a critical stabilising force for families and communities recovering from the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.
He reminded the audience that Jamaica’s western region, which is home to many H-2A participants, suffered extensive damage, affecting livelihoods and local economies, and that overseas employment offers an opportunity for households to rebuild with dignity and financial security.
“Jamaicans are ready for opportunity, every worker employed overseas is advancing a household, strengthening a district, and contributing to the ongoing development of our country” the Charles Jr said.
He closed by reaffirming Jamaica’s readiness to meet the demands of American agriculture while empowering its people at home.
“Our workers are ready. Our systems are ready. And our commitment to partnership has never been stronger,” he said. “As we rebuild after Melissa, empowerment through employment remains one of the most powerful tools we have, for families, for industries, and for our nation.”
The annual forum offers Jamaica a strategic platform to expand its employer network, strengthen longstanding partnerships, and ensure full alignment with the evolving US regulatory environment.
