Barry G’s family extends thanks for messages of comfort
The family of ace radio disc jockey Barrington “Barry G” Gordon has expressed thanks to Jamaicans here and abroad, as well as his many fans worldwide for their messages of comfort in the aftermath of his passing in October.
“We would like to express gratitude to everyone who has reached out with condolences, prayers, and support. Your messages have brought our family comfort during a very difficult time, and we are truly grateful and appreciative of this,” Gordon’s wife Josett and other members of his family said in a statement.
“Barry was a remarkable person whose spirit left a lasting impression on everyone he met. His friendliness, warmth, and quick wit made us all feel at ease. We will forever cherish the laughter, wisdom, and light that he has given us over the years,” the family said.
“With his unique voice and broad intelligence, he inspired others and elevated every conversation over the airwaves. His humour made even the toughest days feel lighter. We carry his memory with deep gratitude, honoured to have experienced someone so extraordinary.
“Our family is deeply grieving this loss as we hold onto the many memories that have reminded us of his kindness, joyful compassion, and the love he brought into our lives,” the statement read.
Barry G, whose exuberant delivery and charismatic personality made him one of Jamaica’s great broadcasters, died at Savanna-la-Mar Public General Hospital in Westmoreland on October 29, the day after Hurricane Melissa hit that section of Jamaica. He was 70 years old.
Barry G joined the staff at Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation in the late 1970s, shortly after graduating from Kingston College. He hosted shows such as the Boogie Down Show on Saturday nights which announced him as a rising star.
Later, he hosted the four-hour 2 To 6 Supermix which made him the number one disc jockey in Jamaica for most of the 1980s.
In their statement, his family members also expressed thanks to everyone who has been keeping them in their thoughts and prayers as they “navigate this challenging period”.
A date for the thanksgiving service for Barry G’s life will be announced soon.
