Sparks to fly between STATHS, Vauxhall today
St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) and Vauxhall High will clash in a mammoth ISSA/Wata Manning Cup encounter to decide the second semi-final spot from Zone B at the Waterhouse Stadium at 3:00 pm today.
Eltham High, which was the first team to reach the semis, will face the eliminated Calabar High at Red Hills Road starting at 3:00 pm.
STATHS and Vauxhall and are embroiled in a do-or-die match with STATHS sitting in second spot with a marginally better goal difference of zero, compared to Vauxhall’s -1. In light of that, STATHS only need a draw to reach yet another semi-final.
STATHS have been to three Manning Cup finals under the tutelage of Philip Williams, losing all to Jamaica College (JC) on penalties. They will depend on Shankeno Grant, Marvin Henry, Justin Johnson and Kennardo Gordon for victory and they are fancied to achieve that.
But before all of that, they must get by the dark horses of the competition, Vauxhall High, under the astute leadership of young coach Kyle Butler.
Vauxhall are playing in the quarter-finals for the very first time in the school’s history and they are looking to create more history by reaching the semi-finals.
They have surprised everyone to reach this far with victories over the more established schools like Camperdown High, St George’s College, last season’s runners up St Catherine High, and more recently Calabar.
But they have played STATHS twice this season without success, losing their first encounter 2-1 and drawing the second 1-1.
But they have shown that they can compete, holding favourites JC to a 1-1 draw in the first round.
Richardo Walker, with 10 goals, will expect to lead the Vauxhall charge along with Jevauni Cummings as they hunt their first and most vital win over STATHS.
Meanwhile, the Gregory Allen-coached Eltham High will enter their match against Calabar in a more relaxed mood, knowing they are safely through to the semi-final.
Santana Headley, with 15 goals, will be Eltham’s main player along with Steen Bull and Jevaughnie Rowe and they should prove too hot for a Calabar team preparing to play in the second-tier Walker Cup.
The quarter-finals will continue on Saturday with Excelsior and Charlie Smith fighting for the last semi-final spot. Both teams are on three points behind the already qualified Jamaica College on six points, who will play Hydel High, who are without any points.
