Island Village welcomes visitors amid hotel disruptions
ST ANN, Jamaica — Island Village Plaza in Ocho Rios, St Ann is reassuring visitors that entry is free and that the plaza remains open for business despite a pause in day-pass sales by some hotels due to the passage of Hurricane Melissa.
With several hotels reporting disruptions, Island Village promotes itself as a one-stop destination offering a full day-out experience: a movie theater, Margaritaville-adjacent beach, multiple dining options, and shopping including duty-free items and souvenirs.
The complex also features a health facility and a dedicated kids’ play area, providing “more bang for the buck” for families and travelers seeking convenience and value.
“People come here for the full day experience—safe, affordable, and comprehensive,” said Operations Manager Andrew Reid.
“We’ve built a place where you can eat, shop, watch a movie, enjoy the beach, and participate in activities all in one location. No need to worry about hotel limitations,” he added.
Mayor of St Ann’s Bay, Councillor Michael Belnavis framed Island Village as a reliable alternative amid hotel constraints.
“During the holidays, day passes are a key part of celebrations for visitors and locals alike,” Belnavis said.
“Hotels may suspend passes or close, but Island Village keeps the spirit of the season alive and ensures people can fete loved ones, both from overseas and locally,” he added.
Local business leaders and community stakeholders voiced support for the plaza’s approach.
Todd Fletcher, a prominent local businessman, described Island Village as a hub that stabilises the parish’s tourism economy by maintaining access to entertainment and services even when hotel operations are disrupted.
“Island Village acts as a bridge for visitors restricted by hotel policies,” Fletcher noted.
Transport operators and fishing communities also highlighted the plaza’s role in sustaining tourism flow. Bobby McKenzie, a longtime local transport operator, said more travelers are opting for Island Village as a convenient day-out option.
“It’s located for easy access, and the activities appeal to all ages,” McKenzie said.
Allan Thompson, a fisherman who works near the neighboring fishing beach, added that Island Village complements local life by offering safe, family-friendly experiences and opportunities to enjoy fresh seafood beyond hotel premises.
Island Village emphasised safety and service continuity. The plaza has enhanced cleaning protocols with staff prepared to assist visitors navigating evolving hotel day-pass policies.
“Our promise remains simple: more amenities, more entertainment, more value—all within a compact, walkable footprint,” Reid said.
“We’re not replacing hotels; we supplement the guest experience, delivering a reliable option for day passes and family outings when lodging partners are constrained,” he added.
