PNP calls for independent probe after New Year’s triple deaths in St James
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The People’s National Party (PNP) has called for an immediate, independent investigation into the deaths of three people, including a four-year-old child, during an incident involving members of the security forces in Granville, St James, on New Year’s Day.
According to reports, the incident occurred shortly after midnight in the Brown’s Lane area and resulted in the deaths of two adult males and a child. The circumstances surrounding the security operation have sparked public concern and led to protests by residents demanding accountability, transparency and justice.
In a release on Friday, the party and Shadow Minister of National Security, Fitz Jackson, expressed condolences to the families affected.

While acknowledging the difficult and often dangerous conditions under which law enforcement officers operate, particularly during the new year period, the Opposition stressed that the death of a child requires careful scrutiny and full accounting of the events that transpired.
“The loss of life, particularly that of a child, is deeply troubling and requires an immediate, independent, and transparent investigation,” Jackson said. “Every Jamaican has the right to feel safe and protected. We are therefore calling on Indecom and all relevant oversight bodies to thoroughly investigate this matter to establish the facts and ensure accountability.”
Jackson added that public confidence in the security forces depends on professionalism, proper training and clear oversight, especially during operations that place civilians at risk.
The PNP is also calling for a review of current engagement protocols and increased dialogue with community leaders, arguing that such measures are necessary to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The party reiterates that any reduction in violent crime can only be sustained when trust exists between communities and the security forces tasked with protecting them.
