Courtney Wilson returns to stage with Boopsie’s Homecoming
Since making his debut as Shaggy in Jambiz International’s Cinderellisha and the DJ Prince 24 years ago, Courtney Wilson has been a mainstay of that company’s plays. He returns for Boopsie’s Homecoming, their latest comedy, which opened on Boxing Day at the Courtleigh Auditorium in New Kingston.
Wilson plays Larry, whose sister Petal is married to Boopsie (Glen Campbell), who lives in the United States.
Boopsie has sent money to her for years to build their dream home, but when he visits Jamaica finds little material has been purchased and the funds unaccounted for.
Unlike Larry, who is also his sister’s accomplice, Wilson has never been part of such a scheme, but he knows the pain Boopsie feels.
“I’ve never experienced that situation first-hand, but I’ve experienced a similar situation in which I’ve trusted family with business and was betrayed,” he said in an interview with the Jamaica Observer.
He does have considerable experience working with Campbell, the star of most Jambiz International productions.
Like Boopsie’s Homecoming, they are written by Patrick Brown, who is a founder and principal of the company.
Wilson credits that familiarity for plays such as Indecent Proposal, Room 513, Windscream Posse, and Lockdown.
“Chemistry has always been great working with the Jambiz team… We know each other’s weaknesses and strengths and we always look out for each other on and off stage,” he said.
Born in west Kingston, Wilson was raised in McIntyre Villa, the east Kingston community known as Dunkirk. He discovered acting while attending Excelsior High School and appeared in events produced by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission.
Later, Wilson earned an associate degree in the performing arts from Excelsior Community College.
Being a member of the Jambiz International team has not only helped him improve as an actor, but kept him active since 2002.
“It’s very important to keep busy as an actor because without work there’s no income, especially when you have a family to feed. I also love challenges and exploring new ventures, so I do welcome diverse roles,” said Wilson.
Completing the cast of Boopsie’s Homecoming are Daindra Harrison and Renae Williams, who alternate as Petal, and David Crossgill as Papa.
The play runs Wednesdays to Fridays at 8:00 pm, with two shows (5:00 pm and 8:00 pm) on Saturdays and Sundays.
