Redevelopment work for National Stadium to commence July 2027
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Sports Minister Olivia Grange says work to redevelop the National Stadium is expected to commence in July 2027.
Grange, who gave the update during a press conference hosted by the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) on Wednesday, said Stadium East will be refurbished to accommodate all activities while the National Stadium is under construction.
“It would facilitate some of the smaller events that currently take place in the National Stadium and provide improved facilities for patrons, officials and athletes using Stadium East as a warm-up area,” the minister said.
Grange said this redevelopment of the stadium is expected to provide 10,000 additional seats for patrons and will accommodate some 50,000 patrons for concerts.
Additionally, Grange said there will also be new stands with varying levels.
“All stands, except the grandstand, will be covered by a sweeping roof. The grandstand roofing structure will be maintained because that is being treated at the National Stadium as a heritage site, and that particular structure is a heritage structure that we cannot touch. It is as strong as the first day that it was erected, and so that overhanging arch will remain,” Grange added.
She said the facilities will include modern changing rooms, medical areas for athletes and patrons, an anti-doping testing area, concession areas, restrooms, throwing areas, and a running track.
