JC’s Salmon smashes class one discus record
KINGSTON, Jamaica—Joseph Salmon threw a massive 66.32m and smashed the Class One discus record as four records were broken on the opening day of the Purewater/R Danny Williams/JC Development Meet at the Ashenheim Stadium on Friday.
Salmon of Jamaica College achieved his personal best and easily defeated Calabar’s Kimari Kennedy who threw 56.00m, and Tyrone Henry of Papine High who finished third with a mark of 52.87m.
With this being the first meet of the year, Salmon has put the Champs record on high alert, which is currently held by Travis Smikle with 66.88 m since 2011.
Salmon’s teammate Michael-Andre Edwards also broke the Class One triple jump record, leaping to an impressive 15.58m. Calabar’s Antonio Anderson was second with 15.14m, and Roshane Francis of Wolmer’s Boys’ third with 14.95 m.
Edwards’ mark is an improvement on his 15.38m that landed him gold at Champs last year. Wilbert Walker of Morant Bay High has the Champs record of 15.74m, held since 2004.
Calabar’s Talshawn Edwards soared past the record mark of 13.17m with 14.30 m, but with a tailwind of +2.5.
On the girl’s side, in the Class One Triple Jump, Zavien Bernard of Hydel soared to 12.33m, erasing the old mark of 12.15m. She won ahead of teammate Sabrina Atkinson with 12.28m.
In the Class Three Discus, Dajounae Rudolph of Holmwood Technical won with a record throw of 43.27m. Katya Christie of Vere was second with 38.38m.
