Bail extended for man accused of stealing gas cylinder
KINGSTON, Jamaica — A man accused of stealing a gas cylinder had his bail extended when he appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Tuesday.
Dernon Harvey appeared before Judge Alwayne Smith to answer to a charge of simple larceny arising from an incident at a gas station in Constant Spring.
The court heard that Harvey was allegedly caught on CCTV footage removing a gas cylinder from the premises. When asked by Judge Smith to state his plea, Harvey replied “guilty with explanation”.
Harvey told the court that he was not stealing the gas cylinder but was collecting it on behalf of someone who had already purchased it.
After hearing the explanation, Judge Smith turned to the prosecution and asked whether there was any evidence to show that the incident was not a misunderstanding.
The judge then asked Harvey about the cost of the cylinder and its whereabouts. Harvey responded that it cost $9,000 but said he did not know where it was, explaining that “someone had taken it away”.
The prosecution was granted additional time to gather further evidence, and Harvey’s bail was extended until March 17.
