Racing return to winning ways but MBU eye top spot

Montego Bay United (MBU) are hoping to retake the lead in the Jamaica Premier League today when they take on Tivoli Gardens in a second-round game at the Edward Seaga Complex, set to kick off at 3:00 pm.

MBU slipped into second place in the table on Wednesday after Racing United beat 10-man Treasure Beach 4-1 and assumed the lead on goal difference, after joining them on 32 points.

In the other game yesterday, Dunbeholden FC gave up a second-half lead and were held 1-1 by Molynes United at Dunbeholden Complex.

Four games are scheduled to be played today with third-place Portmore United hoping to end a five-game run without a win, when they host Spanish Town Police FC. Arnett Gardens and Chapelton Maroons — who are tied on 19 points — will meet at the Anthony Spaulding Complex, while Harbour View and Waterhouse FC will face off at Harbour View.

On Wednesday, Racing United beat Treasure Beach for the second time this season, ending a run of four-straight draws and scoring more goals then in their previous five games combined.

Treasure Beach were on their heels early after Richard Brown was shown a straight red card in the 14th minute for a dangerous tackle on a Racing United player just on the edge of the 18 yards box.

They showed good discipline to hold Racing United to a 0-0 draw at half time but it was only a matter of time before the home team took the lead as Nickyle Ellis fired them ahead in the 52nd minute, running on to a through pass to beat goalkeeper Romario Palma.

Jevaughn Brown doubled the advantage seven minutes later when he controlled an attempted clearance form the Treasure Beach backline on his chest and fired the ball back on the volley past Palma.

Nicholas Lawrence pulled a goal back for Treasure Beach in the 66th minute but two substitutes scored for Racing United to take the game away from the visitors.

Chavany Willis restored Racing United’s two goals cushion when he scored from close range in the 68th minute before Mikyle Williams converted a penalty in time added.

Dunbeholden FC moved up one place to ninth after their draw against Molynes United.

Odane Samuels gave Dunbeholden the lead in the 53rd minute but Matthew Ellis came off the bench to score the equaliser for Molynes.

In west Kingston, Montego Bay United will be seeking to extend their three games unbeaten run against Tivoli Gardens, who are unbeaten in their last three games.

Mobay won their first round game 3-1 in the second city in September and appear to be rediscovering the form that took them to the top of the table.

The Xavier Gilbert-coached team have won back-to-back games and have had the better of Tivoli since last season, beating them in the play-offs to qualify for the semi-finals.

The veteran, Owayne Gordon, had his first taste of goal this season on Sunday, when his second half penalty conversion gave them the edge over Dunbeholden and he could start the game along with another experienced goal-poacher Brian Brown.

Meanwhile, Tivoli could go as high as fourth place with a win today and will be confident after securing two wins and a draw in their last three games.

Portmore United have earned just three points in their last five games and will hope to get the better of cellar dwellers Spanish Town Police FC, who have alternated between wins and losses in their last five outings, winning just twice.

There could be fireworks in the Chapelton Maroons vs Arnett Gardens game where the teams are separated by goal-difference with the Clarendon-based outfit hoping to avenge their loss in the first round that ended their perfect start.

Both teams are enjoying a mini revival, winning two and drawing once in their last three games and Arnett Gardens will be flying after back to back wins, outscoring their opponents 5-0 on aggregate.
