Stacked card for Rimsky Trophy today
The native-bred three-year-old Classic series of races is on the horizon, and several runners have a chance to prove themselves worthy of participation in today’s $1.1-million Rimsky Trophy feature race at Caymanas Park.
Local-bred runners Fidelity, Victorious Links, Taylor Made, Mohanlal, Fernando, Uncle Nally, and Midnight Traveller will compete against each other and two American-bred runners, Comuna Trece and Any Means, to test their potential.
The contest is a Restricted Allowance II event for native-bred three-year-olds (non-winners of two) and imported three-year-olds and upward over six furlongs (1,200m).
Mohanlal, a bay colt bred by Casual Trick out of the Shuffling Maddnes mare Raise Your Voice, seems the likely choice to win this trophy race.
After finishing second behind Uncle Nally on debut over four furlongs (800m) on December 14, Mohanlal returned six days later and destroyed rivals by eight and a half lengths in the Miss Ruth Trophy (six furlongs) event.
Mohanlal has been training well for his seasonal debut and he has a good chance of winning after that strong win. Tajay Suckoo will continue to ride.
Taylor Made (Aveenu Malcainu – Another Fury) should also be in the running for top honours here. She made an encouraging debut on December 21 when making all to win over five furlongs (1,000m) round by two and a quarter lengths in 1:02.0 minutes.
The final time was nothing to brag about but the manner in which she won says a lot about Taylor Made’s potential. A change of rider from Abigail Able to Jerome Innis might not be a major boost, but Taylor Made’s performance will be worth watching.
Fernando’s looking strong for the Rimsky Trophy, given his recent form and suitability to today’s conditions. He finished third in the Wayne DaCosta Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes, behind We Jammin and Salute the Don over one mile. Midnight Traveller and Fidelity struggled in that race, finishing 10th and 12th respectively, likely ruling them out of contention today. With Fernando training well, he’s one of the top picks to take home the trophy.
Victorious Links made a winning debut, beating Mo Pai by a head over five and a half furlongs on January 3. With expected improvement, she could make her presence felt but a winning run is unlikely.
Uncle Nally was a winner over four furlongs (800m) on December 14, beating Mohanlal in 48.2. Uncle Nally is speedy sort but repeating will be a very tall order for him.
Any Means could be a dark horse in the Rimsky Trophy. He finished fourth on debut behind the ultra-talented Phenomenal Power over five and a half furlongs on December 13. Based on that effort, it could give Any Means an outside shot at upsetting the locals.
