Joy Spence makes Forbes’ 50 Over 50 Global list
Appleton Estate’s Master Blender Joy Spence has been recognised on the prestigious Forbes 2026 50 Over 50 Global list, an annual celebration of leaders, founders, creators, and innovators who are leaving their mark on every sector of business.
Dr Spence finds herself among an elite set who are “the first” in their fields and who continue to redefine leadership and excellence after the age of 50.
“My initial reaction was shock and awe. I had no idea I was even being considered,” Spence shared. “It was my daughter who excitedly shared the article with me from a WhatsApp group.”
The master blender described the honour as deeply humbling.
“My career has never been driven by the pursuit of recognition, but by a genuine passion for the science, the artistry, and the responsibility that comes with protecting a centuries-old Jamaican tradition. To see that quiet, steady work acknowledged internationally is very gratifying,” she said.
Spence emphasised that the recognition reflects a collective legacy.
“This honour reflects the effort of so many who have poured their knowledge, discipline, and pride into Appleton Estate over generations. I stand on the shoulders of master blenders, distillers, technicians, and craftspeople who shaped the integrity and character of our rum long before me. I have merely been a steward of that tradition, helping to preserve and elevate the authenticity of our rum for the world to experience,” the master blender said.
As the first woman to hold the position of master blender in the spirits industry, Spence recognises the significance of representation.
“Visibility matters because it quietly changes what young women believe is possible. I hope this acknowledgement reassures women that excellence has no gender and that leadership can take many forms. You do not need to fit a pre-defined mould to succeed — what matters most is your willingness to learn, your commitment to your craft, and the courage to remain authentic,” she said.
Spence also noted the recognition reflects industry transformation.
“This exemplifies the global shift to the premium aged rum category and the role true craftsmanship plays. More consumers are discovering premium Jamaica rum, long recognised for its unique, complex flavours and excellent quality. I will continue to spread the Joy of rum and Appleton Estate globally by connecting people with flavour and heart,” said Spence.
