Teams enjoy strong start in ISSA urban area youth football competitions
The Burger King-sponsored ISSA Urban Under-14 football competition is on in earnest with some familiar names in Wolmers’ Boys’, Kingston College (KC), and Jamaica College all registering blazing starts, with Hillel Academy following suit in a surprisingly similar fashion.
In the latest set of games on Friday, KC recorded the biggest win, mauling Denham Town 13-0 for their third straight victory, pushing their tally to maximum nine points in Zone B.
KC are the defending champions and have scored 23 goals without conceding, having beaten Camperdown High 6-0 and Tivoli Gardens High 4-0 in their previous games. They will next face Charlie Smith away on Tuesday with the hosts looking for what would be their second victory in five games.
At Winchester Park, St Catherine High hammered last season’s beaten finalists St George’s College 6-0, while Holy Trinity High whipped Bridgeport 5-0 and Excelsior High defeated Jonathan Grant High 5-0 in other high-scoring results.
A day earlier, Hillel Academy announced themselves after hammering last season’s semi-finalists Calabar High 7-0 on Thursday for their fourth consecutive win in Zone F. They sit on 12 points and have scored 16 goals and conceded only once following wins against Ascot (5-1), Campion (2-0), and Kingston Technical (2-0).
Wolmer’s Boys’ are a strong favourite for the title and they have looked awesome in Zone E, winning all four games while scoring 37 times to sit on top of the standings on 12 points. On Friday, they brushed aside Ardenne 11-0 to continue their dominance in the zone.
Jamaica College have won their two games to date and lead Zone D with six points, while St Catherine are in control of Zone C with 10 points, just ahead of Eltham High on goal difference, who are also on 10 points.
Meanwhile, in the Grace Mighty Malt-sponsored Under-16 category on Friday, KC dispatched Haile Sellasie High 9-0 and remained in third spot in Zone B with six points. Jose Marti High lead with 10 points after battling to a 1-1 draw with second-placed Camperdown on seven points.
In Zone A, Excelsior whipped Jonathan Grant 3-0 and lead the zone with maximum 12 points ahead of Holy Trinity on six points after they lost 0-2 to Bridgeport High.
St George’s College gained revenge for their Under-14s by beating St Catherine High 4-1 and currently top Zone C with 12 points. St Catherine are second on nine.
Wolmer’s Boys’ made it four wins from four games, beating Ardenne High 3-0 to be on 12 points in Zone E. St Andrew Technical High School sit second on nine points following their 7-1 mauling of Meadowbrook High.
Calabar also enjoyed revenge in the U-16 category, clipping Hillel 1-0 on Thursday.
The top two teams from each zone will automatically advance to the Round of 16 where they will be joined by the four best third-placed teams.
