Gilbert says Montego Bay ‘on right path’ after blanking Molynes
ST JAMES, Jamaica — Xavier Gilbert, the Montego Bay United head coach, says he is pleased with his team’s consistency in the Jamaica Premier League after a rocky patch following the lengthy break brought on by the passage of Hurricane Melissa late last year.
Montego Bay United started February with a 3-0 win over Molynes United at Jarrett Park on Sunday, on the back of an almost-flawless January.
They have 45 points, seven more than second-placed Racing United, while Portmore United are third on 36 points.
Nashordo Gibbs, in the first half, and Brian Brown and Jourdain Fletcher, in the second half, got the goals for Montego Bay as they became the first team to get to 40 goals this season.
Montego Bay had won once in their first five games — after the restart in early December — before they had been able to steady the ship at the start of 2026.
On Sunday, Gilbert said he was confident they would have got it right eventually.
“I knew it was gonna take us some time to get our footing right, and I think we’re on the right path now,” he said after the game.
“We just have to manage the players, manage the proceedings, manage every game as every game comes with a different scenario, different situation.”
Gilbert said they were taking each game in stride as they went along.
“The rewards were very good for us in January; and we had to start well as these are the toughest two months of the season with a lot of games back to back, six or seven games in those months.”
The tough schedule, he said, had forced some amount of squad rotation for Sunday’s game.
Molynes United’s Jermaine Thomas said defensive mistakes cost them as their winless run extended to three games.
“Today I thought we made some awful defensive errors, and we paid for them. At this level you don’t make those errors. You know, we played well in patches but we were just inconsistent… and that was the problem,” he said.
“This is [only] the third game we’re losing since the restart, so we have been consistent,” Thomas added.
Gibbs was left unmarked to volley a lofted cross from Lucas Lima Correa past goalkeeper Darren Donaie in the 18th minute, to open the scoring.
Brown made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute when he slotted home after being picked out by Fletcher just inside the Molynes 18-yard box.
Brown returned the favour in the 67th minute when he found Fletcher on the left side of the Molynes area. Fletcher side-stepped a challenge before firing high into the top of the goal.
Elsewhere, Racing came from a goal down at half-time to beat Spanish Town Police FC 3-1; Portmore United beat defending champions Cavalier FC 1-0; Chapelton Maroons went down 0-2 to Mount Pleasant FA; and Harbour View FC and Tivoli Gardens finished 2-2.
