Munro’s Smith pleased with throws at STETHS Invitational

ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — Despite a rare loss at a regional meet, Munro College’s Javontae Smith has set high goals for his first season in the Under-20 age group.

He placed second in the Class 1 discus throw during the 41st staging of the STETHS/Ollivierre/Smith Invitational at STETHS Sports Complex in Santa Cruz on Saturday.

But Smith, who leads the Class One classification in the shot put with 18.78m set at the McKenley/Wint Invitational a week prior, won that event with 17.70m.

Smith, the Carifta Games double gold medallist in 2024, won shot put gold and discus throw silver at the 2025 ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships.

Smith also has records in Classes Two and Three of the Country of Cornwall Athletics Association (COCAA) Western Champs.

He said he is looking forward to going up against the “big boys” this season.

“It’s just been good knowing that I’m competing with persons who are in second year [of Class One] or in their final-year Class,” he told the Jamaica Observer on Saturday.

“My progression has been good, and I’m looking forward to great things further in the season. I opened [the season] with 17.37m and my current personal best is 18.78m. And in the discus, I’m currently at 53.10 so I’m looking at better distances further down in the season,” Smith explained.

He said his execution at the STETHS Invitational was mixed.

“I could have been more technical in the shot put — it was more on the brute force side rather than a technique — but it could have been better for both events. It could have been better, but I’m pleased with the results.”

He said he has plans to do well at the upcoming COCAA Western Champs, Carifta Trials, the Boys’ Champs, and claiming a spot on Jamaica’s team to the World Athletics Under-20 Championships to be held at Hayward Field in Oregon, United States, in August.

Munro College’s Rajeem Streete won the Class One boys’ discus throw with 53.63m on Saturday while another Munro College thrower, Brandon Lawrence, was second in the shot put with 14.70m. Edwin Allen High’s Clinton Baker was third in both events.

St Elizabeth Technical’s Davieka Lewis won the Class 2 girls’ discus throw with 45.23m but was second in the shot put to Godfrey Stewart High’s Paulandra James.

Boys’ Champs medallist Santino Distin won the Class 1 boys’ high jump with 1.85m, ahead of Cornwall College’s Carlyle Tingling (1.75m).

Mount Alvernia High’s Malia Housen won the Class 2 girls’ high jump with 1.60m.

Cornwall College’s Zhi-Hew Whitter won the Class 2 long jump with a personal best 6.70m, beating his teammate Andrew Reid (6.27m).

On the track, Manchester High’s Troydian Flemmings won the Class 1 boys’ 400m with 50.34 seconds, ahead of the Alphansus Davis High pair of Nicholas Frederick (50.61) and Tyrrieck Gayle (51.35).

Rusea’s High’s Tiene Barrett took the Class Two boys’ 400m in 52.08, beating the 400m hurdles winner Kemar McLennon (52.49) of Cornwall and Davaughney Jones (52.65) of Rusea’s High.

Sydney Pagon High’s Denae Hodges won the Girls’ Class One 400m with 57.56, defeating the Alphansus Davis pair of Shanika Lindsay and Ameiah Samuel.

Alikay Reynolds of Alphansus Davis ran 59.48 to win the Girls’ Class Two 400m, ahead of her teammate Tabbrel Williams (59.67) and St Elizabeth Technical’s Mareka Williams (59.68).

Frederick of Alphansus Davis won the Class One Boys’ 1500m in 4:19.76 minutes, ahead of Maggotty High’s Charehon Conally and Edwin Allen’s ISSA Champs medallist Joel Morgan.

Manchester High’s Kevon Palmer took the Class 2 title with 4:37.09, beating Luke Palmer of Sydney Pagon and Demar Robinson of Munro.

Sydney Pagon’s Annataseca Blackwood won the Girls’ Class 1 1500m in 5:03.75, with her teammate Alexia Palmer topping the Class Two event in 5:03.52.
