Munro’s Smith pleased with throws at STETHS Invitational
ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — Despite a rare loss at a regional meet, Munro College’s Javontae Smith has set high goals for his first season in the Under-20 age group.
He placed second in the Class 1 discus throw during the 41st staging of the STETHS/Ollivierre/Smith Invitational at STETHS Sports Complex in Santa Cruz on Saturday.
But Smith, who leads the Class One classification in the shot put with 18.78m set at the McKenley/Wint Invitational a week prior, won that event with 17.70m.
Smith, the Carifta Games double gold medallist in 2024, won shot put gold and discus throw silver at the 2025 ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships.
Smith also has records in Classes Two and Three of the Country of Cornwall Athletics Association (COCAA) Western Champs.
He said he is looking forward to going up against the “big boys” this season.
“It’s just been good knowing that I’m competing with persons who are in second year [of Class One] or in their final-year Class,” he told the Jamaica Observer on Saturday.
“My progression has been good, and I’m looking forward to great things further in the season. I opened [the season] with 17.37m and my current personal best is 18.78m. And in the discus, I’m currently at 53.10 so I’m looking at better distances further down in the season,” Smith explained.
He said his execution at the STETHS Invitational was mixed.
“I could have been more technical in the shot put — it was more on the brute force side rather than a technique — but it could have been better for both events. It could have been better, but I’m pleased with the results.”
He said he has plans to do well at the upcoming COCAA Western Champs, Carifta Trials, the Boys’ Champs, and claiming a spot on Jamaica’s team to the World Athletics Under-20 Championships to be held at Hayward Field in Oregon, United States, in August.
