Barnaby snatches Delapenha Trophy in thrilling finish
BARNABY, under a masterful ride from champion jockey Raddesh “Sneaky Fox” Roman, pulled off an exciting win in the $1.25-million Lloyd Lindbergh “Lindy” Delapenha Memorial Trophy at Caymanas Park on Sunday.
The Anthony “Baba” Nunes-trained colt, coming off a nearly six-month break, edged out stablemate Neo Star by three-parts of a length in the Overnight Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward. Rainsville finished third.
Barnaby had been trailing in fifth position, allowing Neo Star (Javaniel Patterson) and Strike Smart (Emelio McLean) to battle for the lead down the backstretch. However, Roman waited for the perfect moment to strike and Barnaby responded magnificently, switching gears in deep stretch to snatch the win. The final time was 1:39.2 (25.0 x 49.0 x 1:14.1 x 1:26.2).
The victory marked a triumphant return for Barnaby who proved his resilience and class despite a lengthy layoff.
Trainer O’Neil Markland and jockey Bebeto Harvey won two races each on the nine-race card.
Markland saddled Emperorofthecats (Evertte Clunis) in the third race and teamed up with Harvey to win the night pan with Tigeramedat.
Harvey had earlier won aboard So Lucky Am I for trainer Ian Roberts in the second race, the Mercury Sprint.
Racing is to continue on Saturday.
