Mt Pleasant could go to second in JPL with win over Treasure Beach
DRAX HALL, St Ann — Former champions Mount Pleasant FA can take over second place in the points table in the Jamaica Premier League with a win over Treasure Beach in a rescheduled game at Drax Hall today, set to start at 3:00 pm.
The teams will be meeting for the second time in three days after Treasure Beach held the Caribbean Club champions to a 0-0 draw at the STETHS Sports Complex on Sunday, earning their first-ever point against Mount Pleasant in the process.
Also today, Chapelton Maroons and Molynes United will meet at Turners Oval as they both seek to end four-game winless runs — also a second meeting in three days.
Mount Pleasant, who had won their previous two games against the St Elizabeth club, are on 37 points and a win today would see them move ahead of Racing United and Portmore United, who are tied on 39 points and will still have two games in hand.
Playing at home could also tilt the scales in favour of Mount Pleasant against the Treasure Beach FC team that are still in relegation danger, in 12th place.
Mount Pleasant’s usually potent attack has not been producing a lot of goals, having just managed to score seven in their last nine games but that has been balanced out by a stingy defence that has given up just two goals over the same span.
Chapelton Maroons and Molynes United were goalless on Sunday, their third-straight drawn game against each other.
Prior to that, Molynes United had won back-to-back games and a win today would see them join Chapelton Maroons on 26 points.
However, if Chapelton Maroons can pull off their first win since mid-January when they edged Spanish Town Police 1-0, they would move ahead of Tivoli Gardens and join defending champions Cavalier and Arnett Gardens in a three-way tie on 29 points.
Meanwhile on Monday, Cavalier ended a four-game, losing skid in style after beating last placed Spanish Town Police 5-0 at Stadium East.
All five strikes came in the second half, with the opening goal from Jerome McLeary in the 52nd minute, ending a goal drought of 329 minutes.
Cavalier had failed to score in their last three games, and the previous goal had come in the 82nd minute of a 2-1 loss to Tivoli Gardens on January 24th.
McLeary’s strike came minutes after a goal from Spanish Town Police was ruled out by Referee Oshane Nation.
The goal opened the flood gates as four others came in quick succession in a 33-minute span — Jeovani Laing made the score 2-0 in the 56th minute, Christopher Ainsworth scored in the 63rd minute, with the other two goals coming from substitutes Chad James in the 68th minute and Damarley Williams in the 89th minute.
