Big boys time!

Quarter-finals set to get underway in ISSA urban U-14/U-16 competitions

THE ISSA urban Under-14 and Under-16 football quarter-finalists have been decided, with six schools securing last-eight places in both age categories.

Kingston College, Jamaica College, Wolmer’s Boys’, St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS), Excelsior High, and Eltham High are all still alive in the Burger King Under-14 and Mighty Malt Under-16 competitions, with quarter-final action set to get underway on Monday.

Hillel Academy and Campion College complete the Under-14 line-up while St George’s College and Mona High are the other last-eight teams in the Under-16 competition.

Thursday’s last set of matches in the Round of 16 brought plenty excitement and a fair bit of drama, as the contenders seperated themselves from the rest in what has so far been a competitive season in both age groups.

In the Under-14s, Wolmer’s registered an emphatic 4-1 victory in their must-win game against Holy Trinity to take top honours in Group 1 while Eltham joined them in the last eight with a 7-0 thumping of Greater Portmore which relegated Holy Trinity to third place, ending their season.

Excelsior took top spot in Group 3 despite a 1-1 draw with St Catherine, while STATHS’s 4-1 triumph at Jose Marti also propelled them into the next round.

The Group 4 top-of-the-table clash between Jamaica College and Campion was settled by a lone strike by JC attacker Odean Slater, while Dunoon and Camperdown ended in a 0-0 stalemate in the group’s other match.

Group 2 came down to the wire, with the previously unbeaten Hillel Academy joining Kingston College in the next round despite a 0-2 loss to the “Purples” who are yet to concede a goal this season. Calabar, who have shown improvements since qualifying as one of the best third-place teams from the group phase, came within a goal of progressing after their 5-1 beating of Vauxhall.

Quarter-final Group A will feature Wolmer’s, Excelsior, Hillel and Campion, while Group B will consist of Kingston College, Jamaica College, Eltham and STATHS.

On Monday, Excelsior will play Hillel and Wolmer’s will host Campion in the Group A openers while KC will tackle STATHS and JC will welcome Eltham in Group B.

In Under-16 action, defending champions STATHS and Excelsior played out an exciting 3-3 draw in a repeat of last season’s final as both teams marched into the next round. St Catherine edged Haile Selassie 4-3 in the other Group 1 encounter.

Kingston College, coached by Jermaine Miller, claimed Group 2 with a 6-2 win over Mona, who also advanced, while Greater Portmore clipped Waterford 2-1.

St George’s College went down to nine men in their 1-0 win over St Jago — confirming group honours and their credentials as legitimate contenders, with Wolmer’s also booking their spot following a 3-0 win over Hillel in Group 3.

In Group 4, JC powered past Jose Marti 5-0 to win the group, and they will be joined in the next round by Eltham who blanked Calabar 2-0.
