Elaine returns!
Thompson Herah third in first race since 2024
FIVE-TIME Olympic champion Elaine Thompson Herah finished third in the women’s 60m at the Camperdown Classic yesterday, clocking 7.24 seconds at Ashenheim Stadium in her first race in 18 months.
Levanya Williams won in 7.17, with Trinidad and Tobago’s Shaniqua Bascombe of Uptimum second in 7.23. Thieanna-Lee Terrelonge was fourth in 7.31.
Before the start, fans stood as Thompson Herah walked out in a pink tracksuit. She later changed into her competition gear.
From lane six, Thompson Herah started well but Williams, running in lane two, pulled clear. Bascombe, in lane five, also edged ahead.
Thanking God, Thompson Herah said she was pleased to get through the race healthy.
“I’m grateful, I’m thankful, I’m satisfied – many more races to come,” she said after the race. “That was like months and years of rust, so I’m pretty grateful for that race, of course.”
She said she dealt with nerves at the start of the race.
“[There were some] butterflies when I went to the blocks, but during the warm-up, I was more chill, cool, and when it was time to go on my marks, that’s when the butterflies kicked in. But I knew how to control that, so it was easy for me to control.”
