Elaine returns!

Thompson Herah third in first race since 2024

FIVE-TIME Olympic champion Elaine Thompson Herah finished third in the women’s 60m at the Camperdown Classic yesterday, clocking 7.24 seconds at Ashenheim Stadium in her first race in 18 months.

Levanya Williams won in 7.17, with Trinidad and Tobago’s Shaniqua Bascombe of Uptimum second in 7.23. Thieanna-Lee Terrelonge was fourth in 7.31.

Before the start, fans stood as Thompson Herah walked out in a pink tracksuit. She later changed into her competition gear.

From lane six, Thompson Herah started well but Williams, running in lane two, pulled clear. Bascombe, in lane five, also edged ahead.

Thanking God, Thompson Herah said she was pleased to get through the race healthy.

“I’m grateful, I’m thankful, I’m satisfied – many more races to come,” she said after the race. “That was like months and years of rust, so I’m pretty grateful for that race, of course.”

She said she dealt with nerves at the start of the race.

“[There were some] butterflies when I went to the blocks, but during the warm-up, I was more chill, cool, and when it was time to go on my marks, that’s when the butterflies kicked in. But I knew how to control that, so it was easy for me to control.”

Earlier, World 200m bronze medallist Shanoya Douglas of Holland High ran 11.45 (-0.5) to lead the girls’ Class One 100m. Shemonique Hazle of Hydel High was second in 11.72, and Shakeya Reid of Penwood High third in 11.99.

In Class Two, Hydel’s Sashana Johnson ran 11.75. Natrece East of Wolmer’s High School for Girls won her heat in 11.83. Rihanna Scott of Ferncourt High took Class Three in 11.91.

In the boys’ Class Three 100m, Ajani Lumley of Wolmer’s Boys’ ran 11.20 (-0.6), the fastest overall. Kingston College’s (KC) Kemanic Edwards won Heat A in 11.49 (-1.1), and Kaden Levermore of Wolmer’s ran 11.56.

Jamaica College’s (JC) Kai Kelly led Class Two with 10.73, ahead of Marquies Page of St Jago (10.77) and Calabar’s Joshua Ricketts (10.82).

In Class One, Excelsior’s Requelme Reid ran 10.46 (-2.2). Jamal Stephenson of Calabar won his heat in 10.52 (-1.1), and Excelsior’s Malike Nugent followed in 10.53.

The relays were held in the morning. JC led Class One with 40.29. Excelsior High ran 40.51, and JC’s second team finished in 41.00.

KC won Class Two in 41.19, ahead of Calabar (41.54) and Wolmer’s Boys’ (41.64).

KC’s Stesean Hurd cleared 1.90m to win the Class Two high jump. Javian Grant of Calabar cleared 1.85m, the same height as JC’s Herwens Guerrier of Turks and Caicos. Dantuan Goode of St Catherine High won Class Three with 1.75m.

KC’s Rekelme Hunter won the open triple jump with 15.60m, ahead of teammate Amani Phillips (15.32m) and Wolmer’s Boys’ Roshane Francis (15.20m).

For comparison, JC’s Michael Andre Edwards won the Class One triple jump at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships last year with 15.38m.

Hydel’s Zavien Bernard won the girls’ Class One triple jump with 12.63m. Immaculate Conception’s Jaeda Robinson was second with 12.29m.
