Money Market comes of age in Open Allowance Reggae Month Trophy
MONEY Market produced a storming late burst to capture his eighth career victory from 32 starts, powering home in the Reggae Month Trophy over five furlongs straight on Saturday, February 14.
The six-year-old bay son of Successful Native, out of Soca Dancer, trained by Gary Subratie and partnered by Dane Dawkins, was registering back-to-back wins, this time stepping up to the Open Allowance class.
“Money Market likes the five-straight. However, he is a versatile campaigner as evidenced by his victory on December 26, at 6½ furlongs. Again, the decisive factor was the immaculate handling by Dane (Dawkins) who kept Money Market close to the outside rails throughout, before coming forward resolutely. It seems that Money Market is getting better and better with age; he is in the peak of form at the moment,” Subratie told this publication.
Drawn ideally in post-position seven coming down the chute, Dawkins watched closely as Mighty Gully (Tajay Suckoo) and Zulu Warrior (Demar Williams) dictated the early fractions of 23.2 for the quarter and a sharp 45.1 for the half-mile. Patiently biding his time, Dawkins asked his mount for more approaching the final furlong and Money Market responded with a decisive surge, sweeping past rivals with authority to score by 1½ lengths in a smart 57.2 seconds.
Mighty Gully held for second while the 4-5 on favourite Of A Revolution, who had beaten Money Market in the Bruceontheloose Trophy on December 6, never recovered from a troubled start and had to settle for third.
“Moving forward, Money Market will be up against some of the best horses around at this time. My job, as always, is to keep him healthy and strong, and to plan his races carefully,” Subratie concluded.
