Jamaican on drug-related charges in Antigua denied bail
ST JOHN’S, Antigua (CMC) — A Jamaican was denied bail on Tuesday when he appeared in an Antiguan court charged with the possession of a controlled substance and with possession with intent to transfer.
Benjamin Isiah Carrington was detained last weekend after police seized 60 pounds of marijuana during a joint drug interdiction operation at the VC Bird International Airport.
The police said that officers attached to the Narcotics Department, along with members of the K-9 Unit and the Customs Enforcement Unit, conducted a coordinated operation at the airport and seized one black suitcase and one green suitcase with a total of 19 sealed packages of cannabis with a street value of EC$360,000.

When he appeared in court, Carrington was not represented by counsel and was remanded to His Majesty’s Prison until May 6.
He was advised that he had the right to appeal to the High Court for bail after the magistrate denied bail, noting that, as a non-belonger, Carrington had no ties to the local community and therefore was considered a flight risk.
