Mt Pleasant look to cut JPL deficit
FORMER champions Mount Pleasant Football Academy could cut the deficit on leaders Montego Bay United to three points today with a win over Tivoli Gardens in their rescheduled, Jamaica Premier League second-round game at the Edward Seaga Sportrs Complex, set to start at 3:30 pm.
Mount Pleasant are in second place on 45 points — same as third-placed Racing United and six points behind MBU’s 51 points — and will seek to extend their unbeaten run against the west Kingston team to 10 straight games.
The second round will end this coming weekend, and two more rescheduled games are set to be played on Thursday, with fourth-placed Portmore United hosting red hot, fifth-placed Waterhouse at Ferdie Neita Park and defending champions Cavalier welcoming relegation-threatened Molynes United at Stadium East.
After giving up a lead against Portmore United and having to settle for a draw on Sunday, Mount Pleasant will hope to get the better of Tivoli who have won just once in their last nine games — a run of results that has left them languishing in 10th place.
With possibly an eye on next week’s Concacaf Champions League quarter-final, first-leg game away to Los Angeles Galaxy, Mount Pleasant will be hoping their attacking players will step up today.
The St Ann team has been less than free-flowing over the last few fixtures, managing two or more goals on only three occasions in their last 14 games.
With marksman Warner Brown’s inability to stay fit, Raheem Edwards has been the most consistent scorer for Mount Pleasant with 12 goals, with next best Daniel Green having just five to his name.
Tivoli Gardens have, however, given up nine goals in their last four games to slip down the table and will be hoping for an upset over the fancied Mount Pleasant team today.
Tomorrow, Portmore United could slip into third place, above Racing United, but Waterhouse FC have been on fire, unbeaten in their last six games and have lost just once in their last 10 outings.
On Monday, Waterhouse brushed aside Spanish Town Police FC 3-0 and will hope to end a two-game losing skid to Portmore United.
Cavalier will look to continue fighting their way up the points table, and their 1-0 win against Racing United on Sunday would have given them a boost of confidence.
