Chris Williams appointed chair of National Basketball League commercial arm
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Basketball Association (JaBA) has officially appointed Chris Williams as chair of the National Basketball League (NBL) commercial arm, marking what the association describes as a bold step towards elevating domestic basketball.
The association made the announcement in an Instagram post on Monday.
According to the association, the appointment comes as the sport experiences a growth in popularity locally and the association explores the development of a semi-professional league structure to showcase talent from across Jamaica and the wider region.
Williams, who has successfully guided similar initiatives in football, brings extensive experience in sports commercialisation and organisational development. His leadership is expected to be central to establishing, promoting and executing the local club league.
Speaking on his appointment, Williams said: “I am honoured that JaBA has offered me this opportunity to again serve my island. Basketball has the global popularity, speed and athleticism to drive engagement. And when you combine that with the amazing brand and vibe of Jamaica…it will be epic. Let’s go! I am confident we can create a semi-professional structure and offer players an opportunity to earn from their talents.”
JaBA president Paulton Gordon said the organisation has been in informal discussions with Williams for several years, and both parties agreed that now was the right time to move forward.
Preliminary talks are reportedly underway regarding the league’s structure, format and possible rebranding, with a strong emphasis on engaging the Jamaican diaspora in the process.
Additionally, Denzil Wilks will chair the Competition Committee, working alongside the commercial arm to strengthen both the sporting and business aspects of the league.
The association said it looks forward to a productive collaboration with Williams as it seeks to develop and commercialise this important arm of Jamaica’s basketball ecosystem.
