Douglas clocks U-20 200m world lead on Carifta Trial final day

Holland High’s Shanoya Douglas once again stole the show at the Jamaica Carifta Games Trials, delivering a World Under-20 leading time of 22.58 seconds (+1.7 m/s) in the 200m, while Sanjay Seymour showboated to an impressive victory on the third and final day at the National Stadium yesterday.

Douglas, who sped to an impressive personal best of 11.06 in the 100m on Friday, lowered her personal best in the 200m, the fourth fastest time amongst the seniors in the world.

Douglas was well clear of Natrece East of Wolmer’s Girls, who held her form despite seeing the Holland athlete moving away in the distance. East was second in 23.48 to book her spot to the Carifta Games. Kimberly Wright of Immaculate Conception was third in 24.224.

Moments later, Sanjay Seymour, who was third in the 100m, won the 200m in 20.95 and could have gone faster were it not for his showmanship near the end of the race.

Deequan Maragh of Camperdown High finished a surprise second in 21.06 to secure his berth to the Carifta Games in Grenada next month. Just behind them was a blanket finish, with the Jamaica College (JC) pair of Elijah Smeikle (21.16) and Nathaneil Martin (21.17) in third and fourth, respectively. Kyle Bodden of Kingston College (KC) was fifth in 21.18.

Markland Williams of Denbigh High punched his ticket to Grenada, easily winning the Boys’ Under-17 800m in 1:55.03 minutes. Luke Plummer of Sydney Pagon was second in 1:57.05, with Wolmer’s Alfario Cunningham third with 1:57.31.

Aneka Lowe of Edwin Allen captured the Girls’ Under-17 800m in 2:13.67. Kamaya Graham of Sydney Pagon High was second with 2:14.54.

Kevongaye Fowler of Edwin Allen took the Girls’ Under-20 800m in 2:07.64. She left the field for dead and was well clear of Keyah Anderson of The Queen’s School in second with 2:10.39.

Joel Morgan of Edwin Allen won the Boys’ Under-20 800m in a personal best 1:50.05, just holding off his teammate Malike Anderson who ran the race of his life in 1:50.15. William Knibb Memorial’s Thywaine Sterling was third in 1:51.23.

Second- and third-placed finishers Anderson and Sterling were both disqualified for impeding the fading Shemar Green of JC 110m. Green, who was bundled over and fell, got up and finished at the back in 2:17.35.

Joaqueem Miller of St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) moved up to second with 1:52.13 and joins Morgan as Jamaica’s representatives to Grenada.

Alyssa Carty of St Jago High looked good in winning the Girls’ Under-17 400m hurdles in 59.89 and was the only runner under the one-minute mark. Imani Lowe of the Convent of Mercy “Alpha” was second in 1:01.47 ahead of her schoolmate Sha Jay Davis in 1:01.72.

Marria Crossfield of Edwin Allen won the Girls’ Under-20 400 hurdles in 58.71 as she caught Natassia Fletcher of Hydel High on the line. Fletcher clocked 58.73 for second.

JC’s Oneil Lawrence took the Boys’ 400m hurdles in 52.46 with Hydel’s Kavian Minott second in 52.85. In the Boys’ Under-20, Carifta champion Robert Miller of Hydel won in 50.53 ahead of KC’s Jahvanie Tyrell in 51.50.

St Mary’s High Shayon Smith captured the Girls’ Under-17 200m in 24.32 (-1.5 m/s) as she slowly reeled in early leader Danelia Clarke of Edwin Allen who was second in 24.42. Kerian Jarrett of Maggoty High was third in 25.20.

Mario Ross of Wolmer’s Boys’ continued his return to form, winning the Boys’ Under-17 200m in 21.18 (1.0 m/s). Tyler Morgan of JC was second in 21.35, ahead of Javane Clayton of Calabar in third with 21.54.

JC’s Michael-Andre Edwards captured the Boys’ Under-20 Triple jump, leaping 15.78m on his second attempt and bypassing his remaining jumps. KC’s Rekelme Hunter was second with 15.07m.

Joshua Patrck of KC took the Under-17 triple Jump with 14.60m with Calabar’s Talshawn Edwards second with 14.51m with Marques Yeard of Wolmer’s third with 14.37m

Earlier, Dashanelle Clarke won the Girls’ Under-17 triple jump with a leap of 11.98m, just ahead of Jannessa Allen of Holmwood Technical with 11.96m while Sabrina Atkinson of Hydel High won the Under-20 with 12.44m ahead of Akaylea Brown of Edwin Allen with 12.22m.

Shamanda Wilmot of Holmwood emerged the Girls’ Under-17 javelin winner with a throw of 43.78m. Swaiceyann Black of Vere was second with 34.30m. In the Under-20, Zoelle Jamel of Immaculate Conception won with 46.95m ahead of Ramona Freemantle of Vere with 42.19m.

Tashan Godfrey of Edwin Allen took the Girls’ Under-17 100m hurdles in 13.00 ahead of the Alpha pair of Macaela Gordon and Seana Wilson in 13.47 and 13.63, respectively.

Wolmer’s Girls got the quinella in the Under-20 100m hurdles as Tian Marshall sped to an impressive 12.97 and pulled her teammate Akeelah Bell to second in 13.21. Regina Bailey of Holmwood Technical was third in 13.65.

In the Boys’ Under-17 110 hurdles, Wolmer’s Boys’ Mark-Daniel Allen won in 13.57 ahead of KC’s Brandon Bennett in 13.67. Calabar’s Kemarley Fletcher was third with 13.96 after hitting the ninth hurdle and was passed by Bennett.

The Boys’ Under-20 110 hurdles was thrown wide open after big favourite Robert Miller of Hydel withdrew from the event. He had won the 400m hurdle earlier.

St Jago swooped in and took the top two spots courtesy of Romarion Jibbison and Marquies Page in 13.37 and 13.60, respectively. KC’s Jonathan Clarke was just behind for third in 13.65.
