Cuban medics are professionals, not labourers
Dear Editor,
It is surprising that so many Jamaicans see nothing wrong with payments for work done by Cuban medics in Jamaica being sent to the Government of Cuba.
One politician went as far as saying there is nothing wrong with paying the entity with whom the contract was signed, which, in this case, is the Government of Cuba. He also used the example of Chinese working on projects in Jamaica. What was lost on that People’s National Party (PNP) politician is that these Cubans are professionals and not labourers.
If I am building a house, I would certainly be making payments to the contractor, but if I am operating a medical centre, I would pay the professionals directly and not the recruiting agency.
Even then, would those supporting the payment for work done by doctors and nurses being paid directly to the Government of Cuba support payments for our farm workers in the United States and Canada being made directly to the Government of Jamaica?
I rest my case.
