D’Angel honoured in Spain Town
...says EP, reggae album coming
The “Lady of Dancehall” D’Angel was honoured in her hometown of Spanish Town by Clive Ward, director of the Trailblazers Marching Band, and the Dela Vega City Community Cadet Unit led by Mr Lewis for 10 years of philanthropic work in the community.
With over 1,000 people in attendance at the Spanish Town Bus Terminal, Alison Herd from the Social Development Commission (SDC) and St Jago High School old boy Desmond Shaw handled the presentation for the evening.
“This honour, I carry it with pride, with gratitude, and with a promise to keep doing more,” D’Angel told the Jamaica Observer.
“This year will be my 10th year giving back not only to Spanish Town —in St Catherine, the parish I was born and raised in — but to the entire Jamaica touching the most vulnerable in the best way I can. Even during Hurricane Melissa, I’ve impacted thousands of lives and I still continue to do so even after the aftermath.”
The singer went on to reflect on the sentimental value that the recognition holds, noting that it is priceless, and that she is pleased to have shared it with many familiar faces.
“There’s a different kind of feeling when the love comes from where you’re from. To be honoured in Spanish Town… this one hits deeper than words can explain. Everything I do, every life I try to touch through my foundation, it all starts right here. Because giving back isn’t just something I do; it’s who I am. To be recognised by my own people, in my own community, for simply pouring love where I come from — that is a reward money could never buy. [I am] forever grateful. Forever rooted. Forever committed to my people,” she said.
Through her foundation D’Angel has been giving back to students and the elderly throughout the years. Her Easter bun and cheese treat is slated for April 4 in Spanish Town.
Meanwhile, D’Angel is also nominated in two categories at this year’s International Reggae And World Music Awards (IRAWMA) set for May 17 at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center in Lauderhill, Florida.
She is contesting in the Best Female DJ/Rapper and the Marcus Garvey Humanitarian Award categories.
When asked about her optimism about copping the awards, the singer said: “I’m already a winner once I’m nominated. It’s always a good feeling to be recognised.”
D’Angel is set to release an EP, thereafter her debut reggae album.
“To my fans, thank you so much for your unwavering support for over two decades. Thanks for your patience with me; I know I’m not always perfect, but, out of every imperfection comes beauty and lessons learnt. Stay with me for the next journey. If I win, you win,” D’Angel continued.
