Mouttet Mile introduces new points system to boost competition
ORGANISERS of the 2026 Mouttet Mile have made some major changes to the conditions of the event to make the race more competitive.
The new conditions were made public on Saturday, March 21, 2026 during the launch of the Mouttet Mile in the Director’s Box at Caymanas Park by Racing Secretary Denzil Miller.
Instead of earnings through the season, points will now be allocated to horses in designated races. These points will be retroactive to January 1, so horses that have already competed will be eligible.
“The decision was made to put points to various races throughout the season to secure a spot in the Mouttet Mile. All the ‘Win And You’re In’ races will also have points allocated. First [place is awarded] 100 points; second, 50 points; third 30 points; and fourth, 20 points. All these points will be retroactive to January 1, so for everyone who has raced and have been successful in the classes designated, [they] will get points,” Miller explained.
The Win And You’re In races include the Ian Levy Cup (April 6), Diamond Mile (July 19), Philip Feanny OD Gold Cup (September 5), Jamaica Cup (October 19), and the Port Royal Sprint (October).
Other changes include increasing post positions for Jamaican horses from eight to 10, and allocating six slots for horses that shift to the island after January 1. One slot will remain reserved for a New York-bred horse. The purse for the one-mile event remains at US$300,000, with purses being paid to the first 10 finishers.
