Tivoli’s Waite wants victory over Harbour View to ignite play-off push
Jerome Waite, the Tivoli Gardens FC head coach, believes their dramatic win against Harbour View FC on Sunday could spark a serious push to get into the Wray & Nephew Jamaica Premier League play-offs.
Tivoli, led by a hat-trick from Rodico Wellington, fought back from two goals down to beat the visiting “Stars of the East” 3-2 at Edward Seaga Sports Complex.
Harbour View seemed in control after a double strike from Rohan Brown inside the opening 26 minutes. However, Wellington answered with goals in the 33rd and 35th minutes before finding the winner in the 61st.
Trayvone Reid could have earned a point for the Harbour View but missed a penalty kick deep into stoppage time.
Waite says he was pleased with his team’s fightback, despite their struggles offensively.
“Going down two-nil early but to see Rodico Wellington rise above expectation and score three goals, that speaks volumes for the Tivoli team. Outside of that, the [number] of chances that we created we should have easily won this game by at least six goals but a win is a win,” he said.
Although Tivoli remain in 10th, they’re now four points off a play-off spot with eight games remaining. Waite is hoping that the team can build on the victory.
“We needed this win today to ensure that if we’re going to reach top six, today was the day that we needed to start winning games,” he said.
“It is important and as long as these players understand the importance of Jerome Waite being here, it will speak volumes. They are lacking in lots of areas but it’s my duty to continue working with them.”
Harbour View’s struggles continue as they remain in 12th on 28 points, just one adrift of the relegation zone.
