Campion, St Jago share honours on 1st day of Grace Shield cricket final
CAPTAIN Abraham Waugh once again led from the front, hitting 112 runs from 102 balls as Campion College reached 246 all out against St Jago High on the first day of the three-day ISSA/First Global Bank Grace Shield urban cricket final at Melbourne Cricket Club on Monday.
West Indies Under-19 player Vitel Lawes also grabbed the headlines on the opening day, ending with 6-105 for St Jago.
St Jago were 28-0 at the close with Danza Hyatt Jr on 15 and Luwayne Pryce on 11. Pryce faced 23 balls and hit one four while Hyatt faced 19 balls and stroked three fours.
Campion College won the toss and decided to bat, and opener Waugh stroked 14 fours to set Campion College on their way to a fighting total. Waugh was following up from his decisive 52 runs and 3-9 against Jamaica College in the semi-final.
Matthew Lloyd, who also starred in the semis with 57 and 5-17, hit 37 this time around. Neo Xavier made 24 runs.
Earlier, Campion College got a good start as Waugh and Antoine Campbell put on 42 for the first wicket before the latter went for 12 runs.
Waugh and Jonathan Fuller put on 32 runs before Fuller was run out for eight runs. But Waugh found another decent partner in Matthew Lloyd, and they shared an 87 run partnership before the Campion skipper went with the score on 161.
He was caught by wicketkeeper Luwayne Pryce off the bowling of Wayne Plummer after facing 102 balls and steadied the innings for Campion College.
Zachary Taylor was bowled for 15 by Lawes, who then dismissed Elisha Russell for nought as Campion lost two wickets on 195.
Lawes, left arm spinner, was selected in the ICC Under-19 World Cup Team of the Tournament, and he showed why as he wrapped up the Campion College innings, bowling Xavier for 24 and having Jadon Smith caught by Raheem Willie for six.
Wayne Plummer supported Lawes with 3-48.
St Jago got to the final by ending Excelsior High’s two-year reign, getting the better of them by virtue of first-innings honours in a drawn semi-final match, with Lawes stroking 114 and taking 4-50.
In the other semi-final, Campion College also got the better of Jamaica College by claiming first-inning advantage in the drawn contest.
