Injuries force changes for Carifta team heading to Grenada

FOUR athletes, including Excelsior High’s Riquelme Reid, the Boys’ Class 1 100m champion from the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships last week, have been replaced in the Jamaica team scheduled to depart the island today for Grenada ahead of the start of the Carifta Games on Saturday.

Reid pulled up in the first round of the Boys’ Class 1 200m last Thursday, a day after winning the 100m in 10.12 seconds, and took no further part in the championships.

He will be replaced by Calabar High’s Khamani Gordon, who was fourth in the Under-20 boys’ 100m final at the Carifta Trials held at the National Stadium from March 6-8.

Camperdown High’s Daequan Maragh, who was second in the Under-20 boys’ 200m at the Carifta Trials, has been replaced by Jamaica College’s Elijah Smiekle, who finished third.

Hydel High’s Junior Gallimore, who was second in the Under-20 boys’ 400m at the Carifta Trials and also in the Class 1 boys’ 400m at Champs, has been replaced by Kingston College’s Jabulani McLeod.

Holmwood Technical’s Annastacia Hall, who was second in the Under-20 girls’ 400m at the Carifta Trials, will be replaced by Alphansus Davis High’s Shanika Lindsay.

Meanwhile, Happy Grove High’s Jaquan Souden, who was second in the boys’ decathlon at the ISSA Championships, and Edwin Allen High’s Britani Barron, who won the girls’ heptathlon, have also been added to the team, which will be seeking a 39th straight title.
