KINGSTON, Jamaica—Reggae Boy Leon Bailey is expressing disappointment and has issued a public apology to his country after the Reggae Boyz failed to qualify for the World Cup, following a 1-0 extra-time defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in an inter-continental play-off on Tuesday.

Bailey, in a captioned Instagram post, said that qualifying for the World Cup was something he had dreamed about for years, and not ‘getting over the line’ hurt him deeply.

“The day I’ve worked so hard for finally came, and unfortunately, it wasn’t the result we all wanted. This moment is one I’ve dreamed about for years, and to fall short of getting over the line and qualifying for the World Cup hurts deeply,” Bailey wrote.

“Every time I step out to represent my country, I carry that pride with me. I give everything I have—not just for myself, but for every single Jamaican who believes in me. And the hardest part right now is knowing that, this time, it just wasn’t enough,” he continued.

The winger said he feels the disappointment not only for himself but for his country.

“I’m truly sorry that I couldn’t get us over the line. You deserve that moment of celebration, and I wanted nothing more than to give that to you. More than anything, I just want to say thank you. Thank you to everyone who has supported me, believed in me, and stood by me through it all. It never goes unnoticed, and it means more than I can explain,” Bailey added.

He emphasised that representing Jamaica is the greatest honour, and that will never change.

“This one hurts deeply, but I remain forever grateful to represent this nation,” he concluded.
