Treasure Beach gets major waste management boost with SPM, BREDS partnership
ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — Treasure Beach took a decisive step toward environmental preservation and improved service delivery on Wednesday with the launch of the “Let’s Keep Treasure Beach Clean” initiative, spearheaded by SPM Waste Management Limited in partnership with the BREDS Treasure Beach Foundation.
Held at Kingfish Plaza in Calabash Bay, the initiative seeks to strengthen waste management compliance among businesses and residents, while supporting the growing demands of the area’s thriving community tourism sector.
A key feature of the initiative was the presentation of approximately 100 garbage drums to be distributed to stakeholders, aimed at improving waste containment and enabling more efficient collection practices across the community.
Mayor Richard Solomon, addressing attendees, stressed that maintaining a clean environment is critical to sustaining Treasure Beach’s appeal as a tourism destination.
“As this community continues to grow, particularly within the cottage industry, we must remain vigilant in protecting our surroundings,” he said. “Cleanliness is a shared responsibility that directly impacts our economic and social well-being.”
Regional Operations Manager at SPM Waste Management Limited, Sheldon Smith urged a shift in public mindset regarding waste disposal, pointing out that improper practices place undue strain on collection systems.
“Waste management is not just about the trucks and the sanitation officer’s collection waste,” Smith said. “It is about how and where we dispose of garbage. We all have a role to play in keeping our communities clean.”
Chairman of BREDS Treasure Beach Foundation, Jason Henzel, described the initiative as vital to preserving the legacy of community-driven tourism in the area.
“Treasure Beach has long been a model for sustainable tourism, built on the vision of early pioneers like Desmond Henry,” Henzel said. “This partnership ensures that as we grow, we do so responsibly.”
State Minister in the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development, Delroy Williams commended the collaboration, noting that it aligns with the Government’s broader goal of improving public services and community infrastructure.
He also highlighted that ongoing economic improvements would allow for expanded resources and enhanced service delivery across the island.
The initiative marks a critical investment in both environmental protection and community development, reinforcing the importance of partnership and public participation in maintaining Jamaica’s natural and built environments.
