Cavalier, Racing in crucial JPL play-off showdown
Defending champions Cavalier SC and Racing United will meet at Stadium East today, starting at 4:00 pm, in a game that could go a far way in determining their fates in the Jamaica Premier League.
Racing have slipped from a ‘comfortable’ third place to a precarious fifth on 56 points, four more than Cavalier, who have struggled for consistency all season.
Both teams are under threat of missing the play-offs, with Arnett Gardens and Dunbeholden FC among the teams seeking to replace them in the top six.
Meanwhile, leaders Montego Bay United (MBU) are a point away from securing a top-two place and a bye to the semi-finals when they play away to Harbour View, who are back in the relegation zone.
MBU, Mount Pleasant FA, Portmore United, and Waterhouse FC have already secured their play-off spots.
At the other end of the table, Spanish Town Police could be officially relegated today with a loss to Phoenix Chapelton Maroons.
Racing and Cavalier have shared wins this season and, with two games to go after this match day ends on Monday, neither team can afford to lose today.
Racing need only a win to lock up their place in the play-offs for the first time, but have hit a bad patch and are winless in their last eight games, losing back-to-back matches.
To add to their problems, they will be without Nickyle Ellis, one of their few scoring options, who was sent off in time added in their 2-1 loss to Molynes United on Wednesday.
Cavalier have managed seven points from their last five games and a win today would help them keep the chasing teams at bay, while even a point would ensure they stay in sixth place.
Arnett Gardens have won three of their last five games and could close the gap on Cavalier, but will play away to Portmore at Ferdie Neita Park.
Portmore have beaten Arnett Gardens twice already this season and are coming off back-to-back wins, with little to lose today.
Dunbeholden are well set to make a run at a play-off spot if the opportunity presents itself and will face relegation-threatened Treasure Beach at STETHS Sports Complex.
Dunbeholden are in ninth place on 48 points and have secured their place in the league next season, but Treasure Beach, who are coming off a confidence-boosting win over Waterhouse on Thursday, must win if they are to remain in the league.
Treasure Beach have picked up four points from their last two games and are a point above the relegation zone, but have lost both games to Dunbeholden this season, conceding four goals in each.
